Maria L. Briggs, 91, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026 in Portland, ME. She was born on November 27, 1934 in Frankfurt, Germany and went on to live a life marked by an enduring spirit that touched all who knew her.
Maria's journey to America began when she met the love of her life, Robert A. Briggs, who was serving with the United States Army in Germany. The two married on December 31, 1953 and in January 1954 Maria immigrated to the United States. They settled in Bridgewater, MA where they raised their four children.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert A. Briggs, and her grandson, Matthew Cronin.
Gardening and being among friends brought Maria contentment. She tended her yard with meticulous care and pride for many years. When age eventually made outdoor gardening no longer possible she simply brought her garden indoors tending to plants with the same attention she had always shown. It was a fitting reflection of her character, Maria did not give up on the things she cared about.
Maria was social by nature and embraced being in the company of others. She had an effortless ability to draw people in and her presence left an enduring legacy.
Above all, it was time spent with her grandchildren that brought Maria immeasurable joy. Their presence in her life was a treasure she cherished deeply.
Maria is survived by her four children: Bertram Briggs of Middleboro, Massachusetts; Lynn Wells and her husband Brian of Germany; Cynthia Briggs of Middleboro, Massachusetts; and Vernon Briggs and his wife Elizabeth of Wells, Maine. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who were the continued joy of her life.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the many dedicated professionals at The Barron Center whose compassionate and gracious care of Maria during her final chapter brought tremendous comfort to both Maria and her family.
Services will be held privately. Arrangements are entrusted to Advantage Funeral Services in Portland, Maine.
