Marie (Defazio) Kocak passed away on June 21, 2023 at Saint Joseph's Rehabilitation and Residence in Portland, ME, after a long battle with Renal disease. Marie was born to Samuel and Asunta (Coroniti) Defazio on May 14, 1950. Marie grew up in Medway, MA with her two sisters, Irene and Lorraine. Marie had many cousins that she and her sisters would spend a lot of time with and were very close to throughout the years.
At 28, Marie traveled to London with her sister Lorraine, and while on vacation, met her future husband, Sitki Kocak. Together they had many adventures, and eventually had two daughters, Suna and Nadya. In 1986, Marie and Sitki went to Maine for a weekend away and purchased the motel they stayed in; the Snow Hill Lodge located in Lincolnville, Maine. They owned and ran this motel for 22 years while raising their family and being active members of the community.
In 1994, Marie and Sitki added a third daughter to their family named Jennifer whom they "unofficially" adopted and continued to raise as one of their own. In 1996, Jennider gave birth to her first daughter, Taylor, and Marie was overjoyed to have another baby in the house. Taylor was Marie's little sidekick, and they were always together. Marie loved nothing more than spending time with her family, whether it be traveling on vacation, watching basketball games with her girls, or spending time at the beach and mall. Marie found much happiness in spending time with her children and their friends over the years.
In 2008, Marie and Sitki moved to Palm Coast, FL, where they built their dream home and began their plans for retirement. Marie raised her oldest grandson Aydan, and found much joy in caring for him over the years. During her time in Florida, Marie enjoyed spending many hours at Flagler and Daytona Beach with her husband Sitki and grandson, Aydan. Marie suffered with health issues the last five years of her life and spent the last seven months with her daughter Suna in Portland, ME. Suna spent everyday with Marie assisting in her care, making her feel at ease and loved. Marie looked forward to spending this time with her daughter. Marie always had the soul of an angel, always giving and never asking for anything in return. She has taught us so many lessons on how to love unconditionally. Those lessons will continue on.
Marie was predeceased by her parents Samuel and Asunta Defazio of Medway, MA. Marie is survived by her husband, Sitki and their children, Suna (Kocak) Shaw and husband, Robert Shaw, along with their 4 children, Bradyn, Olivia, Jasmine and Madelyn of Windham, ME; daughter Nadya Kocak of Jacksonville, FL; 2 grandchildren, Aydan Adams of Palm Coast, FL, and Isabella Kocak of Rockport, ME; daughter Jennifer Ankers and her two daughters, Taylor and Cadence Ankers and granddaughter Adrienne Achorn. She is also survived by her sister Irene Antonellis and husband Mark, of Bellingham, MA and their children and grandchildren, as well as her sister Lorraine Demire of Medway, MA and her son Daniel Demire and wife Jill. Daniel and Jill also provided a lot of care, support and great comfort to Marie over the years and held a special place in her heart. Marie will be greatly missed by her friends and family. Thank you to the staff at Maine Medical Center and Saint Joseph's Rehabilitation and Residence for taking such good care of Marie during the last seven months of her life.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at 10am at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland, Maine. A gathering after will be held at daughter Suna Shaw's home in WIndham.
