Mary Virginia Luby

Mary received a BS in Nursing from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, TX. As an RN, Mary worked as a public health nurse, childbirth educator, visiting nurse and nurse supervisor. Early in her career, she was involved in giving the first polio vaccines. When her children were young, she taught natural childbirth to many new families and was instrumental in starting the first hospice program in the Attleboro area. She retired from Community VNA, Attleboro, MA in 2004.

She has always been an inspiration to her family and friends by living true to her convictions. She became involved in the peace and justice movements during the Vietnam era and worked tirelessly for the cause throughout her life, leading weekly peace vigils with Women in Black well into the 2000s. She was always deeply concerned with the environment and did what she could to minimize her impact on the earth. Mary was a highly intelligent woman who made education a lifelong endeavor by reading, attending lectures and continued going to classes into her 80’s.

Mary had an overwhelming love and commitment to her children and grandchildren. She was a compassionate, supportive mother and grandmother, and could often be seen at recitals, performances, games, and graduations cheering on one child or another. She will be greatly missed by so many.

She is survived by five children: Mary Tumavicus, John Tumavicus, Ann Tumavicus, Edward Tumavicus, and Ellen Tumavicus. Mary is survived by four siblings: Margaret Weisbruch, Charlotte McCracken, John Luby, and Daniel Luby. She was predeceased by her daughter Constance Tumavicus and her sister Constance Meyer. Mary also leaves many dear grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

A memorial service for Mary will be held on Saturday, June 14th at 1pm, in the Community Center at 720 Putnam Pike, Greenville, RI. 02828. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Another Mother for Peace,, PO Box 8285, Berkeley, CA 94707, https://www.anothermother.org/donate.
