Nelson Arthur Major

Nelson went home to spend his birthday with his bride, Flora of 57 years. He met Flora at a gas station he worked at, on Minot Avenue in Auburn, when she kept going back with her friend to “chase” him. He often said that he finally “caught up”. Nelson and Flora were married July 25, 1964. They lived a full and loving life, first moving to New Hampshire for a job opportunity for Nelson, then moving back to Maine where they purchased his brother David, Jr’s house in Mechanic Falls.

He was born September 11, 1942 in Lewiston Maine. He grew up in Minot as the seventh child out of eleven. He was the son of David Major, Sr. and Veronica Rita (Sturtevant) Major. He graduated from ELHS in 1961.

He loved making new friends and loved traveling with his sons, Ed and Ron during his time with Amway to traveling with his daughter, Patti during his time in Scentsy. He loved his day trips with Flora and his daughter Pamela. He was all about family time.

Nelson was quite the storyteller, a jack of all trades, and a joker. He loved to “toot” his horn and make the kids think the bus was there. He and Flora spent most weekends at camp with Buzz and Mattie where he got to relax and help Buzz rebuild a camp. In his earlier years, he was the President of the Maine Line Riders Motorcycle Club, where he and Flora logged thousands of miles on his motorcycle with his sister Pat and her husband Gary.

After retirement he was a volunteer driver for 2 organizations who organized rides for people to get to dialysis, foster care visits, substance abuse rehab clinics, and more. He was driving an average of 500 miles per day. He was very proud of this job because he loved helping people. He was featured on television for his contribution too.

In 2024, he had a stroke, which caused him to lose his license, leaving him homebound. This was a huge setback, but he made the most of it and rarely complained. Earlier this year he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and it was unfortunately untreatable, so for his own safety he was moved to a nursing facility, where he left a HUGE impression.

His children would like to give all of the staff at Maine Medical, Pine Point Nursing/Rehab, CMMC and d’Youville Pavillion, a huge thank you for taking such great care of our dad. Your kindness and patience made this time more bearable. He tried teaching many of the staff at d’Youville, where he was the longest, the “toot” too.

Nelson is survived by his four children: Ed Major and his partner Lisa, Pam Major, Ron Major and his partner Amy, Patti Lynch and her husband Kevin as well as his 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and 1 great, great granddaughter. He is also survived by siblings, Larry Major, Sr. and his wife Sally, of Pelham, NH, George Major of Kittery, Maine, Jerry Major and his wife Terry, of Norway, Maine, Sandra Coutermarsh and her husband David of Polk City, Florida, Ruth Goding of Auburn, Maine, and Robert Major and his wife Darlene of Pace, Florida. He is also survived by many cousins in Canada and in the United States like Lorraine Poulin, whom he adored.

Nelson was predeceased by his bride, Flora Major; brother, David Major, Jr. and his wife, Irene; his sister Mary Elwell and her husband Richard; his sister Joyce Reid and her husband Allen; his Sister-In-law Judy Major; his sister Patricia Crane and her husband Gary, Sr.

The family would like to invite anyone who knew and loved Nelson to come and celebrate his life and share stories with us on Saturday, November 7, 2026 from 1:00 – 5:00 pm at the American Legion, 41 Elm Street, Mechanic Falls, Maine.
