

Richard Gallupe, 96, of South Portland, Maine, passed away on June 27, 2023, in Portland, Maine. He was born on December 1926, in South Portland, Maine. Richard is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Delene and Bruce Stern, his granddaughters Sara and her husband Matthew Davison, Rachel and her husband Nathan Frederick, and his five great-grandchildren Adam, Andrew, Megan, Noel, and Connor. He also leaves behind his special loved friend and companion Gloria.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Adelbert and Adeline Gallupe, his wife Elenor, his sister Dorothy, and his brothers Donald and Clifford.
Richard graduated from the South Portland school system in 1944 and went on to serve in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He served as an aerial and ground photographer and was stationed in Japan as part of the occupation forces from late 1945 to 1946.
After his military service, Richard had a successful career in the food industry. He worked for Beech-Nut Packing Co. and later joined James H. McInerny Food Broker, where he managed the tri-state area. As a second career, he joined G.M. Pollack Jewelers and managed the "old" downtown store for a few years. He then worked part-time at the Maine Mall store before retiring in 1996.
Richard attended the Stevens Ave. Congregational Church and found solace and community there.
In his free time, Richard enjoyed volunteering with RSVP at local elementary schools, where he tutored third and fourth-grade children in basic math. He was an active member of the Honor Flight Me., American Legion, RSVP, the widow/widowers group, and The Food Group.
Richard Gallupe will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his country, and his community. His kindness and willingness to help others will be greatly missed.
