Robert (Bob) was born in Biddeford on November 17th 1943 to Kenneth L. Harriman and Maude M. Durrell.
He grew up in southern maine, attending Thornton Academy in Saco. He later moved to North Anson, where he graduated from Anson Academy in 1962.
Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Army and attended SMVTI.
While attending SMVTI, he often frequented the lunch counter at Soule's Candy Kitchen in Portland.
It was there, in 1966, that he met his future wife of 50 years, Patricia (Joyce).
They were married on January 17th, 1970 and had just recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Shortly after their wedding, they moved briefly to Boston where he had begun his career with the
United States Postal Service in 1969. With the start of their family, they moved back to Portland.
In 1976, they moved their family to a house on Meeting House Hill in South Portland,
where home is still today.
Bob remained with the Postal Service for 32 years, retiring in 2001. In the early 70s, he would also occasionally work
at the State Liquor Stores in Portland and Falmouth with his brother-in-law, Stanley Joyce. Upon retirement,
he worked part-time at the Betsy Ross House in South Portland.
He was always active and enjoyed being outdoors. He loved to ride his bike, go for walks and could often be seen in the
backyard with his clubs, chipping golf balls.
He loved animals and enjoyed the company of many pets, both past and present. We are sure he has since been reunited with his many friends of the past.
He was an avid reader with a book by his side at all times. He had an interest in many subjects, but particularly in History.
He retained the knowledge that he learned and was smart. Whether it be trivia, a crossword puzzle or an episode of Jeopardy...he always
had the answers, but never took the glory. He knew every zip code in the state and If you needed to know anything about the what, where, who or why...
he could tell you.
He enjoyed watching sports with his football team of choice being The New York Giants. His favorite baseball team
was The San Francisco Giants, but of course, he was also a fan of The Boston Red Sox and enjoyed watching their games
with his family.
He was well liked by everyone. He had a calm demeanor, always put others first and never complained about anything.
He will be remembered by his family as kind, smart, funny, loving, selfless and brave, although,
he was so much more than that!
Bob is survived by his wife of 50 years, Patricia Harriman of South Portland;
Sons: Robert Harriman Jr. of South Portland, Joseph Harriman of Lisbon,
"Bonus" Son: Shawn Golec of Windham; Daughter: Rachel Harriman of Windham;
Granddaughter: Leah Harriman of Virginia; Sister: Helen Bernier of Biddeford; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is greatly missed by his kitties: Heidi, Libby and Penny.
A private family service will be held at Calvary Cemetary in South Portland at a later date.
If you would like to honor his memory, please consider a donation to
The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland or The Gosnell House in Scarborough.
The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at The Gosnell House and Southern Maine Hospice for the care in which they gave to Bob.
They would also like to thank for their wonderful friends and neighbors for their outpouring of support.
