

Virginia Louise Cadwell Willoughby, age 83 of Westbrook, passed away on March 26, 2014 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. Born January 10, 1931 in Lewiston, Maine, Virginia was the daughter of Richard and Esther Cadwell. She attended school in Lewiston and worked as a guide at Record Hunting Camps in Kingfield as a teenager.
Coleman and Leora Miller played a large and important part in Virginia’s life and made it possible for her to go to nursing school by providing her a safe place to live.
She married Lamont C. Willoughby in October 1953 in Washington, D.C. Virginia worked in the Osteopathic Hospital in Portland where she met Dr, Rand for whom she worked for 23 years. She subsequently went on to continue her nursing career with Dr, Schober for another 22 years retiring at the age of 72.
Virginia enjoyed snowshoeing, cross country skiing, reading, canning, fishing, gardening and traveling. She shot her first deer when she was 15 with a .22.
Virginia was a charter member and held office as president of Westbrook Rescue from 1968 until it went to a paid service in the 1980’s. She was well known for delivering the first baby on rescue.
She is survived by her brother James Cadwell, sisters Patty Ridely and Jenny Savage, her children Carol Hanks, Linda, Chuck, Richard, and Lori Willoughby, 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and1great grandchild.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Dunn Street Legion Hall, 17 Dunn Street in Westbrook on April 6th from 5:30 to 8:30pm.
