Joe Patrick (“Pat”) lived a life centered on love, gratitude, and kindness. He often said he was happiest when surrounded by his family—Vicky, Jacob, Jaymi, Jacob Patrick, Jes, Darin (August 2025), Kane Patrick, Xavier and his beloved dogs, Max, Boss and Maddie. He truly cherished talking, laughing, and sharing moments together, whether in person or over the phone. Always ready to help both friend and family. His love for those closest to him was the foundation of his life.
Pat was the “Little Prince” to his parents and 3 older sisters. This was a title given in jest but happily honored in perpetuity. His father, a decorated WW2 veteran, never let this adoration get in the way of instilling in him a work ethic that was enviable. This old school dad’s toughness was paired with the selfless love given by his mother. Her fostering of children in need etched in him a calling to serve others.
Pat attended St. Leander’s elementary, Risley Middle school, Centennial High and Southern Colorado State College. He received a Civil Engineering degree with honors. A spur of the moment trip with his brother-in-law to a job interview resulted in the beginning of a 36-year career with the Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway.
The Railroad is not a job but a way of life. The sacrifice and consistent dedication to this craft was not overlooked by his family and friends. He would do whatever he could to make the big days. The look of a proud dad at his sons sporting events after working all night left his boys in awe. Over the years, time spent as a Brakeman on the caboose, Switchman, Conductor, Locomotive Engineer, Assistant Trainmaster and Safety coordinator gave him a unique perspective on railroading. Pat was honored at BNSF headquarters in FT. Worth and was given the 1998 safety employee of the year award for his work with Operation Lifesaver.
Pat had a genuine interest in the human condition and never missed an opportunity to make a new friend. People of all ages would gravitate to him and before long a bond was formed. He built lasting relationships throughout his lifelong career with the railroad, formed loyal friendships with his buddies at the gym, and was on a first name basis with the sometimes overlooked among us. His down to earth and outgoing nature left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Pat had a personality that could light up any room. His many nieces and nephews would eagerly wait for “Uncle Pat” to arrive, knowing he would come with a bag full of candy and a pocket full of money, generously sharing with all of them. This tradition has now continued with great and great-great nieces and nephews clamoring to him at every family get together. That special fan club started by his sisters has grown with the generations. And his love for them grew even bigger. Pat’s whole hearted belief in their deserved happiness and success will be greatly missed.
Pat enjoyed many great trips with his wife, sons and grandsons over the years. Always ready to go to a last-minute concert, comedy show or game. He loved the beach and the Colorado rivers. He was an avid fitness fanatic for the last 35 plus years. He hated missing and would make it a point to find a gym even when out of town or on vacation. Random rides cruising the 57 Bel Air with his boys or in one of his other toys was always a fun way to get some fresh air. Pat was never stingy and knew how to live it up. If he wanted it, he got it. Never miserly, he would give happily because he enjoyed making people smile. He was known to help people down on their luck and ask them to not tell anyone. Over the years these acts would not stay secret, making their way back to his wife and kids. Info they happily received but were never surprised to hear. Caregiving for his mother and father-in-law alongside his wife for their last years was an honor that really put thing into a greater perspective. He enjoyed having fun with material things but would be quick to remind those close what the real treasure is.
Pat leaves behind his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Vicky (married 51 years); his sons Jes (father of Darin and Kane Patrick) and Jacob (husband to Jaymi and father to Jacob Patrick); and his sisters Sarah, Rosemary (Joe), and Berta (Bob). Nieces Tracy(David), Angie(RJ), Pamela(Troy), Stephanie, Jackie and Jody. Nephews Steve and James. Numerous great nieces, great nephews, 2xgreat nieces and 2xgreat nephews. Numerous cousins. Many amazing friends that were family as well.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jared Thomas; his grandson, Darin Dwaine; his parents, Joe and Jennie Valdez; his niece, Dana Cadena; his nephews, Anthony Vallejos and Mark Crespin; his in-laws, Doug and Mary Barnhill; his brother-in-law, Doug and his sister-in-law Sue.
Rest easy, JP—until we meet again. WE LOVE YOU!
A Rosary will be held, Tuesday, May 19th at 6:00 pm at Sacred Heart Cathedral (414 West 11th st. Pueblo).
A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Cathedral (414 West 11th st. Pueblo). A reception will held following the Mass at the Pueblo Union Depot.
