Alan was a loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend. He’s now in heaven watching over his wife, Michele Shipley Dorsey and children; Cailin, Patrick, Nolan, and Caroline; his mother, Susie Dorsey, father-in-law Tom Shipley, mother-in-law Patricia Shipley, siblings Billy and Becky Dorsey, and many in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Williamsburg, VA Sheriff William B. Dorsey.
Alan grew up in Williamsburg and graduated from James Madison University where he was a member of the Men’s Basketball team. He earned his Masters Degree from Georgia Southern University. He was proud to work for Cisco Systems, whose incredible support for the family will never be forgotten.
He shared his love of sports as a coach on his children’s baseball, basketball, and soccer teams. Alan volunteered as coach for East Wake Soccer Association, Knightdale Parks and Recreation, Cathedral Schools, Bluestar Carolina Basketball, and Wake County Basketball Association. Alan took great pride in teaching the fundamentals, teamwork, and a love of winning. He was a role model and friend to many players and coaches.
Throughout his life, Alan exhibited compassion, perseverance, commitment, and a positive attitude in all areas of his life. He never gave up on anyone or anything and his constant faith and encouragement are a lasting legacy for all who knew him.
Funeral Mass Friday, October 7, 11:00 am at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, 5801 Falls of Neuse Rd, Raleigh, NC 27609. Reception following Mass.
