Tony, the son of the late Anthony Joseph and Theresa Ann Bevacqua, was born December 3, 1924 in Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania. Tony was raised with his five siblings: Margaret Marino, Joseph Bevacqua, Vera Galeazzo, Gloria Bevacqua and Rose Ruberto who all preceded him in death.
Tony was a decorated veteran of the US Army serving in WWII. His company fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was seriously injured in combat and received a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. After returning from his service, Tony earned his Bachelor and Masters Degrees from Eastern Kentucky University. Tony dedicated his career to the North Carolina Community College system where he served as the Vice President of Curriculum and Development for thirty-six years. During his career, Tony served with four of North Carolina’s Governors: Terry Sanford, Jim Hunt, Luther Hodge and Bob Scott. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Prevention of Blindness and the Ford Consumer Appeals Board.
Tony married Emma Nash Boyd on March 4, 1944 and raised four children. Tony, often lovingly referred to as Papa Tony, was well known for his charm, strength, and love of all things Italian. One of Papa Tony’s greatest joys was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After his retirement, Tony enjoyed spending time at his lake house on Lake Gaston, Casa Aqua. Tony was also an avid golf player.
Tony is survived by his wife, Emma and three children: Rick Bevacqua, Terry Richardson and Tim Bevacqua and his wife Suzi Bevacqua. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Tal Bevacqua, Lib Bevacqua, Amy Richardson, Emily Richardson, Catherine Richardson, Brett Magnum, Natalie Bevacqua, Warren Bevacqua, and Robin Bolash; and three great-grandchildren: Emma Haverkamp, Risa Bolash, and Mila Bolash. He was preceded in death by his son, David Bevacqua.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at White Memorial Presbyterian Church 1704 Oberlin Road Raleigh, NC 27608.
