Avigdor Goren passed away on November 25, 2021. He was born in Haifa, Israel under British mandatory rule on September 23, 1929 to Shlomo and Klara Grinshpon. In 1947, he was appointed a member of the Palestine Police Force and served in Israel’s War for Independence. After receiving a degree in mechanical engineering from the Technion Israel Institute of Technology, he moved to Massachusetts and was part of a design team creating production equipment that led to the automation of the semi-conductor industry. One of his greatest accomplishments was co-inventing an automatic prober capable of testing semi-conductor chips in hi-volume production. He went on to receive a MBA from Northeastern University and a master’s in biomedical engineering from the Technion. As a biomedical engineer, he conducted research to improve hospital bed design and later computerized digital imaging for angiography. He was very proud of the patents he was awarded during his professional years.
During his retirement, he became a fine woodworker creating beautiful furniture inspired by the Queen Anne and early American styles. He will be remembered for his accomplishments as an engineer, master craftsmanship as a woodworker, commitment to education for his family, as well as for his love of Israel, classical music, public broadcasting, Consumer Reports, and shredded wheat! He was predeceased by his wife of over 50 years, Lynn Goren and is survived by 4 children and 5 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to WUNC-FM, PBS-NC or your local public broadcasting station.
