Barbara Lull, 100, passed away on March 18, 2019, surrounded by family. She was born in Warren, Pennsylvania to Willis Miles Baker and Margaret Ethel Van Syckel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Howard William Lull, Ph.D., an Episcopal priest, to whom she married on May 3, 1941 at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Barbara graduated from Ohio State University in 1939 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She met her husband, Howard, through her father, then-Director of the TVA Forestry Division, when Howard joined the agency as a forester. When Howard served in WWII, Barbara lived and worked in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. After the war, Howard’s job with the U.S. Forest Service took them to many locations including Tennessee, Virginia, Utah, Mississippi, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
Howard and Barbara retired to New Bern, NC and later relocated to Franklin, NC. While in Franklin, she was an active member of the Nantahala Hiking Club and a member of the Tootlers (a group of musicians who played the recorder). Barbara moved to Raleigh in 1989, where she resided with her son, Andrew, and daughter-in-law, Catherine, until her death.
Barbara had many interests, including reading—with a particular interest in American Indian history—playing the recorder, studying wildflowers and wildlife, rug making, classical music, hiking, and Appalachian Trail maintenance. She was a life-long volunteer involved with many organizations including her children’s school, scouts, community, and church.
Barbara is survived by sons: David and his wife Marsha of Peoria, Arizona; Miles and his wife Maureen of Franklin, North Carolina; Jonathan of Casselberry, Florida; Andrew and his wife Catherine of Raleigh, North Carolina; and daughter Margaret L. Naylor of Lewes, Delaware. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday April 4th at 2:00 pm at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 1520 Canterbury Road Raleigh, NC. There will be a reception following the service.
Memorial donations may be made to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy or St. Michael’s Church.
