With heavy hearts we share that Bernie Bogdon (age 87) of Raleigh, North Carolina passed away peacefully at home on Friday morning, December 8th (on the Catholic Holy Day - Feast of the Immaculate Conception). He was surrounded by his loving family and warm sunlight as he drifted softly to eternal rest.
Bernard David Bogdon was born to Stanley and Juliana on the 13th of June 1936 in Bradford, Pennsylvania, and grew up with his sister Agnes. As a teenager Bernie and his family relocated to Detroit, Michigan where he graduated from Redford High School in 1954. At University of Michigan Bernie received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering on his birthday in 1959. That same day he was commissioned as a United States Naval Supply Corps Officer and served on the destroyer USS John A. Bole DD-755. In 1963 he found the love of his life Marianne at The Pretzel Bell pub in Ann Arbor - the two spent the next 60 years side by side. With Joseph and Emma Concilio's blessing, Bernie and Marianne were married at Saint Brendan Church on the 25th of July 1964 and soon thereafter started their family. Bernie received his Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School in June 1967 and subsequently passed the American Bar Association exam (and passed it again at age 55 for licensure in Florida). In July 1968 Bernie was registered to practice before the United States Patent Office as an attorney and went on to practice intellectual property law in Virginia, New York, Florida, and North Carolina.
Bernie had hands that built - houses, friendships, and communities. Bernie had a visionary mind - he was thoughtful, creative, and spent much of his life doing things for others. He was an avid sports enthusiast, basketball and tennis player; a talented woodcarver and furniture maker; a huge supporter of the arts; an energetic traveler and explorer; a studious gardener; a passionate antique car and toy train collector; a great lover of the outdoors; an engaging conversationalist who loved being with people. And, oh, did he ever love to make you laugh ...
A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and loyal friend to so many, Bernie cared deeply for his family, faith, friends, and country. He lived intentionally and by example. His exuberant love of life, brilliant mind, curious spirit, and uniquely clever wit made Bernie truly one of a kind.
May God Bless our dearest Honey Bunches, Pop/Dad, and Poppi!
