Born August 1, 1930 in Albany, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Granville Glee and Lora Ermon Sloan Cross. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Glea Sloan Cross and Alma Gay Ford.
Carl is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ramona Moss Cross; daughters, Cathy C. McGill and Kimberly Renee Johnson (Tracy) and son, Jerry C. Cross (Laura); grandchildren, Sean McGill (Ann), Melanie Hincapie (Mauricio), Hollye S. McGill, Anna Scott, John, David and Angelita Cross and Benjamin Johnson; great-grandchildren, Tyler and LillyAnn McGill, and Brayden and Nickolas Hincapie. He is also survived by his brother, Robert E. Cross (Virginia) of Byrdstown, TN and his sister, Alice C. McWhorter (Hall) of Albany, KY, in addition to many nieces, nephews and their children.
Carl was very proud of his service to his country and served four years in the Air Force and four years in the Air Force Reserves. He graduated from Oklahoma State University with a BS in Agricultural Science and immediately went to work for the US Department of Agriculture as a Statistician in the National Agricultural Statistics Service. His successful thirty-three year career provided the family with the opportunity to live in many interesting places.
Carl was an avid fisherman and greatly enjoyed the time he spent with his family and a hook in the water. He was also a great sports fan and remained a loyal OSU Cowboys fan while also becoming an avid NCSU Wolfpack fan once the family moved to Raleigh. Carl was a dedicated member of the Optimist Club of Raleigh and spent many years working at the Tarheel Regatta (along with the rest of the family who were enlisted to run one of the many famous Tarheel Regatta Hot Dog stands). He also participated in selling Christmas trees at the Optimist Club Christmas Tree sales. His favorite activity, of course, was the Optimist Club Take A Kid Fishing. Carl was a true Southern gentleman and will be fondly remembered by all of those with whom he worked and played.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 11, 2015, from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Brown Wynne Funeral Home on E. Millbrook in Raleigh. A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 12, 2015, at Trinity Baptist Church, 4815 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC 27609. Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
