

Catherine R. Berkowitz died peacefully on September 6, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Known as a “real people person,” Cahty made friends wherever she went. A life-long resident of Raleigh, she was appreciated for her enthusiasm, zest for life, and beautiful smile. She was an animal lover, valued the arts and culture. A member of Temple Beth Or, Cathy was deeply committed to, and grateful for, her Jewish heritage and community, becoming b'nai mitzvah as an adult. A dedicated advocate for women’s rights and democracy, Cathy was involved since college days in the Democratic party, campaigning for candidates and democratic policies.
Cathy was born on July 1,1953, to Lt. Col. Gordon J. and Burton Wall Rodenberg in Pensacola FL, where Gordon was serving at Eglin Airforce Base. She grew up in Buffalo, New York, where she attended The Park School of Buffalo. After graduating with a BA in History from Meredith College, she went on to receive her Masters Degree in Public Administration from American University in Washington, D.C. Cathy had a varied and exciting career. A highlight of her career, Cathy became the first female manager appointed by the Mitsubishi corporation while working for Mitsubishi Corporation in the Public Relations Department. She worked for Healy Schutte Advertising Company as well as the State of North Carolina in the Department of Administration. While working for the NC State Government Women’s Council, she was a delegate to the 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, in 1995.
An avid runner, Cathy was proud of having run the Marine Corps Marathon in D.C., and was a torch bearer in the North Carolina Special Olympic Games. She also worked in public relations for the World University Games in Buffalo, NY, in 1993. Later in life, Cathy became known for her expertise in client services working with various boutiques and retail outlets, as well as community events. More than one of her friends have participated in fashion shows for a good cause. She had a gift for bringing out the best in people.
Cathy is survived by her sister, Lynne Wall Rodenberg and Lynne’s husband, Jeff Golliher, of the Hudson Valley in New York, and cousins Joyce Marie Allen (and her children), Ann Wall, and Blair Wall Smallman, Blair’s husband, Steve Smallman (and their daughter) all of whom reside in North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made in Cathy's name to Temple Beth Or Tikkun Olam fund or to UNC Rex Cancer Center.
A Graveside Service will be held at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery, 450 N State St, Raleigh, NC 27601, US, on September 9, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
