Charles Austin Smythe

Charlie was born on November 17, 1927 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the only child of Charles E. and Esther Smythe. Following graduation from St. Luke’s High School, he joined the Merchant Marines and later served in the U.S. Army. In December 1950 he married Mary C. Cleary. Charlie and Mary were married for 40 years, until Mary’s death in 1991. Charlie began his career with IBM in 1956 and moved to Raleigh in 1973. He retired from IBM in 1991. He loved to play golf, bridge and loved to travel. He is survived by his six daughters: Kathleen Sholinsky (Robert), Patricia Matos (Alex), Michele Wilson (Dennis),

Terri Massengill (Mark), Judy Tunstall (Marcus), and Maura Pope (David); eight grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren, and special beloved

cousin, Jeanne Mulert of Pittsburgh. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Brighton Gardens for their loving care over the past few years.
