Donald Franklin Putman, of Raleigh, NC, gained his heavenly wings on July 28, 2025. He is now joyfully reunited with his beloved wife, Lynda Dreamkeeper Putman, and his parents, Milford R. Putman and Madeleine Grace Putman.
To friends and neighbors, he was Don or Mr. Don. To his children, he was Daddy — or affectionately, Weedle. He leaves behind his three children: Amber (48), Tahnee (40), and Noah (38), who will forever cherish his love and guidance.
Don had a true zest for life and a deep love for animals of all kinds. He was most at peace in nature — whether surrounded by mountains, lakes, rivers, or trees — though he also had a soft spot for the beach.
Born into an Air Force family, Don traveled widely as a child. He spoke often of his time in Germany and in Portland, Maine, where he graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School.
His love story with Lynda began in San Antonio, Texas, where they met at a Stop and Go market. It was love at first sight, and they married just months later. Don proudly adopted Lynda’s daughter, Amber, from a previous marriage, and together they welcomed Tahnee and Noah in 1985 and 1987.
The family settled in San Antonio, where Don worked as a Program Manager for military aircraft at Kelly Air Force Base. He continued his education at Palo Alto College, all while raising his children and serving as a mentor and leader in the Boy Scouts of America through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In 2000, the family relocated to Warner Robins, Georgia, where Don continued his career at Robins Air Force Base. When Lynda’s health declined, Don took an early retirement to care for her — a testament to his unwavering devotion. He remained by her side until her passing in 2010.
In 2016, Don and Noah moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, to be closer to Tahnee. Don never met a stranger — he gave freely, without hesitation, and always welcomed others with a calm and generous spirit. He was steady, kind, and rarely angered.
Even in his final years, Daddy kept his childlike wonder and contagious laugh. He danced through life until the very end.
Don will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts and dreams.
With love, he will be especially remembered by:
His children: Amber, Tahnee, and Noah
His brother Dennis, sister Sheryl, and three nephews
Daughter-in-law Jennifer Petersen
And countless friends, neighbors, and former colleagues
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 9th, at 11:00 a.m. at Common Thread Church, in the Main Sanctuary (2011 Ridge Rd., Raleigh). A fellowship/gathering will follow the service in the fellowship hall.
*Cowboy or church attire is welcome and appreciated.*
