Born in Thomson, NY, she is survived by her husband of 67 years, William D. Thorne an IBM retiree; her children Robert Thorne, Alan Thorne, Patricia Schmoeger and Nancy Hinkle; Daughters-In-Law Susan Thorne and Catherine Thorne; Son-In-Law Terry Schmoeger and predeceased Son-In-Law William Hinkel. Her grandchildren are Stephanie Thompson, Jennifer Thorne-Davis, Suzanne Horton, Bryan and Michelle Thorne, Adam Schmoeger and Adam and Chris Hinkel.
Doris was crowned queen of her Junior Prom and is said to have read all the books in her 3 room school house library. She became an Army wife in 1943, worked at GE and drove a taxi during the war. After moving to Raleigh in 1965, she became a member of Saint Mark’s United Methodist Church. She supported her husband and raised her family in Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina and Florida. Doris and William’s love for one another were obvious to all who knew them. She taught her family, by example, the true value of love given freely and in great quantity.
Services will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd., Raleigh, on Tuesday, October 12, at 11:00 AM. Her family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
