

Douglas Smith Sasser, 79, of Raleigh, peacefully passed away on November 6, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Wayne County on September 6, 1936 to Robert Harrison Sasser and Cora Earle Sasser and was raised in New Bern. He later married his wife Martha Maultsby and lived in Raleigh for over 50 years. He was a dedicated husband and great family man and very proud of his children.
He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Bengel Warwick and infant brother , Thomas Neil Sasser, and is survived by his brothers, Robert H. Sasser, Jr., David Sasser, sisters, Becky Hedrick, and Betsy Davis.
He is survived by his loving wife, Martha Maultsby Sasser, of 58 years beginning as high school sweethearts; their three children, Debbie Sparrow (Terry), Greg Sasser (Christine), and Chris Sasser (Karin). He was an avid Wake Forest fan and graduated from Wake Forest University. Doug was a wonderful grandfather and great grandfather known by his grandchildren as “Papa Doug”. He dearly loved Jason Sasser, Jordan Sasser (Alexandra), Caitlin Sasser Wilson (Josh), C.J. Sasser and Kylie Sasser; and his great-grand daughter, Westlund Sasser.
Doug was in the Medical Supply Business for many years. He later opened his own business, Sunbelt Medical Textiles. He was a member of Grace Community Church in Raleigh.
“Coach Sasser” enjoyed volunteering as a football coach for many years, and enjoyed following the athletic endeavors of all of his family. He was in the U.S. Army and a Mason.
Doug and Martha enjoyed a good life with their beloved family, many friends and dog Mattie.
A Celebration of his life will be held Thursday, November 12, 2015 at Grace Community Church, 6561 Meridian Dr, Raleigh, NC 27616, at 3:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Doug Sasser Memorial Fund at Grace Community Church.
The family would like to thank Dr. “KR” and Dr. “G” and the entire ICU staff at Duke Raleigh Hospital for their excellent care and compassion provided during his illness.
Doug was truly “one of a kind”. Rest in peace.
