Edward Wallace "Ed" or "Wally" Howarth Sr., 85, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2025, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Born on October 29, 1939, in Queens, New York. Ed lived a life marked by dedication to family, helping others, an inventive spirit, and a signature sense of humor.
He shared 63 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Jean Howarth. Together, they created a life rooted in love and mutual support. Ed was a devoted father to Edward Howarth Jr. and his wife Stephanie, and Sean Howarth and his wife Karen. He took great pride in his grandchildren—Rory, Logan, Parker, and Bryce—who brought him immense joy.
A lifelong electrical designer and creative thinker, Ed approached every project with enthusiasm and originality. He even built Edward Jr. and Sean’s childhood home from just an existing frame, including stonework, brickwork, electrical, plumbing, and flooring. Whether working in the garage or sketching at the kitchen table, he was always exploring new ideas. His passion for innovation was matched by his delight in sharing those ideas—often accompanied by a quick-witted remark that brought smiles to those around him.
Outside of work, Ed found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. He was an enthusiastic admirer of his wife's cooking and never passed up a second helping. He enjoyed playing chess, shooting pool with friends, gardening, doing impressions, and cheering on his favorite teams: the UNC Tarheels, the Philadelphia Phillies, and most of all, any team or activity featuring his grandchildren.
To those who knew him, Ed was more than a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, or friend—he was the heart of every gathering. He was always willing to lend a hand and help others. Ed’s motto in life was “all things in moderation”. His wisdom and humor left lasting impressions on all who crossed his path.
In keeping with his generous spirit, Ed chose to donate his body to science to support education and Alzheimer’s research. Memorial donations can be made to Transitions LifeCare Hospice House (https://www.transitionslifecare.org/donate/) or the Alzheimer’s Foundation (https://www.alz.org/) in his honor.
May his memory bring comfort and continue to inspire laughter, kindness, and creativity for generations to come.
