
Mrs. Gabriela Eleanor Becker passed away on Thursday, June 7, 2012, at the age of 92. Born in Czechoslovakia, she emigrated to the United States in 1938. She married Alan Becker of Brooklyn, NY, in 1941. She was a long-time resident of Teaneck, NJ, where she raised her family. She was an active supporter of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Opera. After moving to Raleigh, NC, in 1989, she volunteered at the North Carolina Museum of Art and at Beth Meyer Synagogue. A professional retail furrier, she enjoyed employment at Hertzberg Furs, Raleigh, NC. She was a lifelong supporter and charter member of numerous organizations, including Hadassah, Brandeis Library, National Holocaust Museum, and the Yiddish Book Depository in Amherst, MA.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Alan Becker, her brother, John Hanus, and her sisters, Lilly Spira, Irene Weisz, Vera Herskovic, and Lana Herskovic. Her parents, David and Sima Herskovic, and her sister, Jana Herskovic, perished in the Holocaust, 1945.
Gabriela is survived by her sons, Dr. Denis I. Becker, and Dr. Steven J. Becker, daughters-in-law, Patricia and Miriam, six grandchildren, Deborah, Daniel, Julia, David, Rachel, and Alan, and her great-granddaughter, Moxie Becker.
Donations in her memory are welcomed at the NC Museum of Art Foundation, Judaic Art Gallery.
