

Garland was born in Hurt, Virginia on February 20, 1937. He graduated from Gretna High School.
Garland was married to Gaynell Moon Haynes on July 5, 1958, they were married 64 years.
Garland worked as a Manufacturer’s Rep Electronic Component Sales. For the past 8 years, he has enjoyed working in the lawn and garden department at Home Depot.
He grew up loving baseball and the New York Yankees. His sports heroes were Yankees’ star Mickey Mantle and golf great Arnold Palmer.
As an athlete, he played semi-pro baseball, and later fast pitch softball. As a left hander, he ultimately became a low, single handicap golfer and was a mainstay during his membership at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh. While living in Lynchburg Va he coached a church basketball team and little league.
He is survived by his wife; Gaynell Haynes, sons; Tony Haynes of Holly Springs, NC, Troy Haynes (Jamie) of Raleigh, NC, daughter; Tanya Helms (Justin) of Raleigh, NC, grandchildren; Christian Godfrey, Robert Helms (Anna) and Dallas Helms, siblings; Wallace Haynes of Darlington SC, Bob Haynes of Hurt, VA, Richard Haynes of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Martha Brown (Bud) of Hurt, VA as well as several nephews and nieces.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Doug and Irene Haynes, sister; Carolyn Farmer.
Garland was outgoing, jovial and a friend to all that crossed his path. Even during the illness, that ultimately took him away, he left everyone in his presence laughing. He will forever be an inspiration to his family and long list of friends and admirers.
A visitation with the family will be held on Friday January 13, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a service at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church with Dr. Jeff Roberts officiating. The church is located at 4815 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, 27609.
