

In 1953, she married A. Dwane Johnson. They settled in Raleigh, where she lived the rest of her life. Gennie was a long-time and active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Raleigh. She served in many capacities at Emmanuel including, teaching Sunday school for many years, singing in the choir, and serving on many committees. She was retired from the Wake County Health Department after many years of service, and worked as a hostess for several years at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home.
For more than 30 years Gennie attended and was involved with Bible Study Fellowship, and the Bible Application Class. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. Her passion was the study of the scriptures, and teaching Sunday school.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Beth Johnson Nurnberger, in 2011.
Surviving are her beloved husband of 58 years, A. Dwane Johnson of Raleigh; her daughter, Sara Johnson Winters and husband, Jeff of Durham; her son-in-law, Walt Nurnberger of Fredericksburg, VA; and seven grandchildren, Stephen, Brian, and David Winters, and Maygen Logan and her husband Marc, Walter, Kelsey Slate and husband Weston, and Hannah Nurnberger.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 27th at 2 pm at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2100 Noble Rd. Raleigh. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 1-2 pm at the church. Burial will follow the service at Montlawn Memorial Park.
