

George LeRoy Hathaway of Clinton, NC, Wantagh, NY, Surf City and Raleigh, NC, passed away on Tuesday September 9, 2025, at the age of 83. He was born on November 1, 1941, in Charleston, SC and grew up in Clinton, NC.
George graduated from Clinton High School in 1961 and earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree at the University of Mississippi. George served as a Medical Technician in the US Air Force from 1962-1966.
He worked as a Biology Teacher for more than 35 years at New Hyde Park Memorial High School in NY and later at Richlands High School in NC. He earned a distinguished title in the National directory of “Who’s Who in American Teaching” four years in a row.
George was actively involved in coaching the New Hyde Park Memorial HS Rifle, Baseball and Football teams, as well as the US Merchant Marine Academy rifle team, and the NY Maritime College Rifle team. For many years George worked as an advisor for the New York State High School Athletic Association. George was elected “Coach of the Year” more than 5 years in a row. George was an Assistant Scoutmaster in Boy Scout Troop 96 of Wantagh, NY. He owned a successful summer camp business, Sand & Sea Day Camp, later to be called Long Island Teen Tours. Later in life, he would serve as a member of the Residence Council at the Verena Independent Living Community.
George is preceded in death by his father Claude M. Hathaway, mother Doris Register Thorton, stepfather H.W. Thorton, grandparents Pearl and LeRoy Register.
George is lovingly survived by his wife, Linda Ciarletta Hathaway; his son, Matthew Hathaway; his daughter, Jacqueline Hathaway Coble; and son-in-law, Brian Coble. He is also remembered by his sisters, Phyllis Coulson (Tom Coulson) and Claudia Gray (Al Gray); his sister-in-law, Christine Mosomillo; his brother-in-law, Robert Ciarletta; and his cherished granddaughter, Grace Coble, along with several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
George left an everlasting impression with everyone he met. He became especially close friends with the dinner table group of Bonnie, Suzy, Sharon, Carol, and many others at the Verena Independent Living Community.
The family would like to thank Duke Hospice Care, especially CNA Tee for the care and compassion shown during George’s final days. As well as M.J., a friend and CNA. Also, Physical Therapist Stacey, who held a special place in George’s heart.
