Gerald B. Carroll of Raleigh, 79, passed away June 3, 2011 after a brief illness. A native of Bronx, NY, Gerry was the son of the late Bernard & Mary Ann Carroll. Gerry was a 1950 graduate of All Hallows High School in the Bronx and received a B.A. in Business Administration from St. John’s University in 1961. He was employed as a personnel manager for Otis Elevator Company in New York and New Jersey, and he retired from a position as a benefits manager for Arthur Young & Company in New York in 1986.

He was an active parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church where he served in the choir and as a catechism teacher for many years. He also ran a social group for homebound & handicapped people in the area. After moving to Raleigh in 1998, Gerry volunteered in various administrative duties at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church. Gerry was also active in post-polio survivor groups in central New Jersey and North Carolina.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Angela (nee Mitorotonda), his daughter Mary McKeveny, son-in-law Kenneth McKeveny and grandsons Ian and Alexander, all of Raleigh. He is also survived by his sister Maureen Heaney and her husband John, his brother Thomas Carroll and his wife Patricia.

Mary and Mrs. Carroll. I am so sad to hear about the news of Mr. Carroll. He was always very kind. Mary and I were great friends growing up in Old Bridge together many years ago. May God bless you and your family. Darlene Lanza Kovacs

I was Gerry’s kid sister by 9 years. He taught me many things including how to read, swim and dive at Rockaway Beach in New York. Additionally, we both enjoyed the birth of rock ‘n roll together in the ‘50’s. Gerry helped give me a happy childhood! Gerry was also my anchor in my adult years. I’ll miss him terribly.

He was my older brother for 77 years. There's no words to express what he meant to me. I've promised to write a memoir about him. RIP

We will miss our dear friend and Yankees fan, and our thoughts and prayers are with Gerry's family. We got to know Gerry through the Triangle Post-Polio Support Group, which he led for many years. Through that leadership, he gave us and many others the opportunity for support, sharing of ideas, and comraderie as we dealt with the impact of post-polio on our lives. Thanks, Gerry.
