Known as Jerry, he was born in Brunswick, Maine on December 3, 1934 to the late Gerald Andrew Gay and Mary (Burns) Gay. He was raised in Jonesboro, ME with brothers Paul and Steve.
Jerry was a veteran of the Air Force and Air National Guard. He received his undergraduate degree from The University of Maine, and earned a Master's Degree from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He went on to a 30 year career as a systems engineer in the computer industry with General Electric and GTE.
Jerry had a quick wit and lived his life with integrity and curiosity. His personal interests were varied and widespread- a true renaissance man. He was excited by learning, and it was typical to see him intensely studying things that intrigued him. Music was a big part of his life; he wrote music, played the trumpet, and taught himself to play the guitar, which he then learned to build. He enjoyed sailing, golfing, taking photographs, video games, and creating almost anything (from Shaker-style baskets, to furniture, and even a beautiful canoe). He was deeply contemplative and spent hours quietly reading, observing nature, or discussing news of the world.
Jerry will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, Susan Bancroft (McGuire) Gay, his daughter Melissa Gay (Bert) Gilkey, son Adam Burns (Christine) Gay, son John Andrew (Christine) Gay, and grandchildren Ryan Adam Gay and Ashley Elizabeth Gay....and Spot. He also leaves behind younger brothers Paul and Steven, nieces, nephews, and some wonderful friends.
Respecting Jerry's wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. The family asks that if you would like to honor him, please donate to your local Hospice.
