Grace Adelia Gordon Smith passed away peacefully with her family by her side in Raleigh, NC on February 6, 2019. She was born on May 30, 1919, in Spring City, Pennsylvania to the late Edna Inez Bradford Gordon and Ridgeley Root Gordon. Preceded in death was her beloved husband of 58 years, Woodrow Edward Smith and her son, Gordon Edward Smith.
From the time she was born, she attended and was baptized in the First United Church of Christ in Spring City, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Spring City High School and West Chester State University with a B.S. in Elementary Education. Grace began her career by teaching grades 1 through 8 in a one room school house in 1938 in Pennsylvania and then first grade in consolidated schools. She married and moved to Lexington, North Carolina where she taught first grade and later to Winston-Salem where she taught kindergarten.
She was a member for 66 years at Konnoak Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC, serving as the president of the WMU, Sunday school teacher, GA leader and choir member. She has lived in Raleigh with her family for the past ten years and was active with the shut-in ministry at Christmas at Millbrook United Methodist Church.
Grace is survived by her daughter, Grace Anne Martin and son in law, David Alan Martin of Raleigh, NC and grandson, Alan Martin and his wife, Jane of Hanover, Maryland. A memorial service will be celebrated at a later date with her immediate family, nieces and nephews at a graveside service in Lexington, NC.
