Doris Gwendolyne Cowan Rotterman passed away peacefully in the early morning on March 19. During her last days she had surrounded by her family.
“Gwennie” as she was called by those close to her, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Albert Lynn Cowan and Gladys Stone Cowan.
She was also preceded in death by her late parents, her beloved husband Louis J. Rotterman, Jr. and her sisters Marilynn Fishley and Marie Hillyer of Ohio and her brother in law Judge Hudson Hillyer.
She is survived by her eldest son Marc Rotterman of Raleigh, North Carolina, Ronelle Matney of Arlington, Virginia, Dr. Lisa Rotterman - along with her grandson Leif Monnett of Anchorage, Alaska and her youngest son Rod Rotterman of Dover, Ohio.
She is also survived by her nieces Diane Fisher and Joy Reed both of Dover, Ohio, Beth Hillyer of Newark, Ohio, Becky Hillyer of Cincinnati Ohio along with her nephews Blair Hillyer of Dennison Ohio and Judge Brad Hillyer of Uhrichsville, Ohio. She is also survived by the spouses of her children, Bud Matney, Dr. Chuck Monnett and daughter-in-law Karen Hayes Rotterman.
During WW II, Gwennie worked in a steel plant in Carnegie, Illinois and then worked for Goodyear in Uhrichsville, Ohio inspecting airplanes.
Gwennie attended Ohio Wesleyan and Ohio State University.
She became an airline hostess for TWA, owned at the time by Howard Hughes. After marriage, she and her family eventually moved from Dayton, Ohio to Washington, DC. In the mid 70’s Gwennie became a successful interior decorator -- working until 2003.
She moved to Raleigh in 2004. Gwennie lived in North Raleigh and later moved to the Heritage Community. Her final home was with her son Marc and daughter-in law Karen.
This rare woman was a ray of sunshine, laughter and a joy to all who knew her. Her infectious love of music, art, architecture, tennis and Ohio State football, made her an advocate for all of these things to those who shared time in her presence.
She will truly missed by all whose lives she touched in her eighty nine wonderful years.
