Mr. Phillips was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering and a graduate of Purdue University with a Masters degree in Physics. He served in the US Army for 21 years and retired as a Lt. Colonel. He served in Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the Army he taught physics at Handley High school for 20 years.
He was married to his wife, Elisabeth (Ellen) for 56 years. He was a member of Braddock St. United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, his daughter, Patricia Lawson of Richardson, Texas and his son, Jeffrey Lee Phillips of Raleigh, North Carolina, and five grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his six brothers, Kenneth, Ronald, Gardner, Gordon, Larry, and Wendall. A family gathering was held in Raleigh. Inurnment will be private. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.brownwynne.com.
