Jacquelyn Johnson Brown, 70, of Montgomery, Alabama passed away Monday, November 7 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Jacquelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis Albert and Sarah Drexel Johnson and her beloved brother, James Albert Johnson. She is survived by her daughters Crystal Laurie Kane (and husband Todd) of Raleigh; Holly Danelle Watkins (and husband Kevin) of Rockwell. Grandson Andrew Kelly Glick (and wife Sarah and son Ethan) of Kannapolis. Granddaughters Katelyn Sarah Glick of Rockwell and Cameron Morris Rutherford of Raleigh.
Graduating from Robert E. Lee High School, Jacquelyn grew up an aspiring concerto pianist and classical soprano whose talents earned a scholarship to Huntington College in 1964. Those same artistic gifts carried over into many published literary works, including a book, screen-play, short stories and poems. However, nursing and a devotion to healing others is where she found her true calling. Her nursing career is what ultimately brought Vietnam Veterans returning from war into her life. Her exceptional compassion and nursing skills routinely garnered the admiration of patients, veterans, doctors and colleagues for more than four decades.
In 1991, God fulfilled a lifelong prayer she so earnestly desired; that of true spiritual companionship with her late husband Captain William Norris Brown Sr., USMC (Ret). For 24 years, their true love endured until his passing in 2014. She is now joined with her beloved ‘Skipper’ in Eternal Life.
Her love and passion for God, family and country never wavered. She is an honorary member of the Khe Sanh Veteran’s Association and the Marine Corps. Combat Counterintelligence Association (MCCIA). Two of her poems honoring U.S. Marines and Vietnam servicemen were published and read at the USS Hue City Annual National Prayer Breakfast Address. In 2005, she wrote and published, “The Look,” a book she dedicated to the loving memory of her brother Jim, who died in 1965 shortly after becoming a U.S. Marine.
Throughout life’s trials and tribulations, Jacquelyn showed her family, friends and the world what unconditional love truly means. To her own-self she was at all times true. Her accomplishments were always secondary to the love and devotion she felt towards her husband, daughters and grandchildren. In the end and forever more, her family and everyone she touched in the world will never forget that ‘Jackie’ passed through….
Services will be held Friday, November 11th at 10:00 am at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home at 1701 E. Millbrook Road; Raleigh, NC 27609. Longtime family friend and her ‘Son-Shine’ Micheal Edelson of Columbia, SC, will deliver her Eulogy. She will be buried at Quantico National Cemetery.
