James J. Garland, Sr., was born November 24, 1926. He graduated from Elkin High School in 1944. He served 2 years in the US Navy from July 1944 to July 1946. He earned a B.A. degree from Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. in 1950, and a Master’s degree from Emory University in 1952. He was the YMCA physical education director in Atlanta, GA. Aurora, Ill, and Asheville, NC before joining IBM in 1957, where he retired in 1988 as a senior marketing representative. Jim was an active member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Francis Asbury Class. He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Royall Garland and a son, Richard R. Garland.
Surviving are: a son James J. Garland, Jr. and wife, Renata; a grandson, James J. Garland III.
Funeral services will be held 10 AM Monday at Edenton Street United Methodist Church, 228 West Edenton St., Raleigh. Burial will follow at Hollywood Cemetery in Elkin, NC.
