

Jerry S. Alvis, Sr., age 81 of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away on April 11, 2016. Born in Athens, West Virginia on November 10, 1934, Jerry was the son of Carl and Helen Alvis of Princeton, West Virginia. He graduated from Princeton High School and immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force when he was but 17 years of age. Jerry served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1956, having achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Following his military service, Jerry attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received his undergraduate degree in 1959 and his law degree in 1961. Jerry was in private practice from 1961 to 1974, beginning his legal career with Judge Franklin Dupree, and leaving private practice to serve as a Superior Court Judge from 1974 until 1976.
Jerry reentered private practice in 1976 and spent 19 years as a senior trial counsel with Young, Moore, Henderson & Alvis, PA and then 7 years with Womble, Carlyle, Sandridge & Rice, LLP. Throughout Jerry’s career, he spent countless hours mentoring young trial lawyers much the same as he enjoyed in his youth with Judge Dupree. Jerry’s honors included election into multiple honorary organizations, including the American Board of Trial Advocates and the American College of Trial Lawyers.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Nona Alvis; sons, Jerry Alvis and wife Carrie Alvis, and Chuck Alvis; and grandchildren, Helen and Rachel Alvis, all of Raleigh.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 14, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home located at 1701 East Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609. The family will receive friends immediately after the service at a reception held at Brown-Wynne.
