

Joan Hartz Sachs, 89, of Henderson, NC died peacefully in her home of 58 years on February 14, 2022 with her children by her side. Born in Baltimore MD, on January 12, 1933, to Miriam and Louis Hartz, she grew up in Baltimore and attended the University of Maryland at College Park. Joan met Nathan Sachs in the 8th grade and they married in 1955. While living in Baltimore they welcomed their children Susan and Louis and, in1962, the family moved to Henderson. Joan was a consummate homemaker and helpmate to her husband in his various business pursuits. She had many talents including sewing, cross-stitch and needle point and her home is filled with beautiful examples of her work. She was an active volunteer in her children’s schools when they were young and also volunteered at Maria Parham Hospital’s visitor desk for many years. An avid reader, Joan was active with Friends of the Perry Memorial Library.
Joan was a loving wife, proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and a beloved aunt and great aunt. She was proceeded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Nathan and her parents and sister Marilyn Levin. Joan, he is survived by his daughter Susan and her wife Susan Sutton of Durham, her son Louis and his wife Madelaine of Henderson and her grandson Joseph Sachs, his partner Brooke Davis and her two great-granddaughters Ava Sachs and Sophie Sachs of Culpepper, VA. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Anne Sachs of Annapolis, MD and Mickey Sachs of Bel Air, MD as well as 3 nephews and 5 nieces and 10 great nieces and nephews.
A burial service will be held at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery at 11:30 am Thursday, February 17. The family will receive visitors at 529 St. Andrews Church Road, Henderson on Thursday, February 17 from 3- 6 pm. Joan will be missed terribly by her family and friends and remembered for her generosity and tenacious spirit.
The family wishes to acknowledge and extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of Community Home Care and Hospice especially Carrie Neal and Holly Wilson as well as Mary Alston, Gloria Burrell and Jackie Williams, (“The A Team”) for the excellent care they provided and for making it possible for her family to fulfill Joan’s wish to remain in her home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donation can be made to H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library, Ruin Creek Animal Protection Service or Community Home Health and Hospice in Henderson, or a charity of the donors choosing.
