

Joan was born September 29, 1935, in Wakefield, Rhode Island, to the late Walter & Evelyn Matson. Joan and her family relocated to Rockingham, NC, when she was 13 years old. After attending nursing school in Hamlet, NC, Joan met and married her husband Norbert "Bert" Skorupa, who was in the US Army, stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC. Joan and Bert raised their two daughters Vickie & Kathy, in a military life, for 23 years, then re-located to Raleigh, NC in 1977, where Joan work with JC Penney at North Hills, for many years. Later Joan worked for Waccamaw Pottery and Stein Mart. Being with her family and friends celebrating life's special moments was one of the most important things in her life. Joan was full of life, laughter, & an inspiration to others.
She is survived by her daughters, Vickie Hall & her husband Dennis of Wendell, Katherine Costine & her husband Brian of Raleigh; her four grandchildren, Shannon Smith, April Cutchins & her husband Luke, Bradley Hall & his wife Jessica, and Matthew Tugwell; great grandchildren, Chloe Smith, Kaleigh & Cole Cutchins, Blake, London & Savannah Hall; her brother Gary Matson and his wife Sandy; Niece Angie Reed & her husband Jason & children Megan & Gabriel; Nephew Jay Matson & his wife Syble & daughter Madeleine.
Her family will receive friends, Monday, November 16, 2015 from 6:00-8:00pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd., Raleigh, NC 27609. Funeral service will be held at St. James United Methodist Church, 3808 St. James Church Rd, Raleigh, NC, 27604, Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at 11:00am, where she was recently awarded special recognition for Life-Time Membership by the United Methodist Women's Group. Interment to follow at Montlawn Memorial Park.
