John William Miller, Jr., CPCU, CIC, CBIA, CRIS went to rest on May 12, 2021, at Duke Hospital in Durham, NC. He was one week shy of his 66th birthday--way too young. The son of the late John William Miller, Sr and Louise McCann Miller, John was born May 19, 1955, in Anderson, SC. John spent his growing up years in Charlotte, NC where he graduated from Myers Park High School in 1973 then NC State University in 1977. He Graduated from North Carolina State University with a BA degree in Speech Communication.
John started his insurance career in Loss Control in 1979 for Utica Mutual. He became an agent in 1983 and earned his CPCU designation in 1988. He joined the Adcock Agency in 1997 and became a principal in the company in 2008.
John held numerous insurance designations and was a long-standing active member of the Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina. He served in leadership positions on IIANC’s Technical, Education, Legislative, IIANC Governmental Affairs Committee and PAC Committees. In 1995 he was awarded the Ernest Young Education Award by IIANC and the prestigious Agent of the Year Award in 2019. He served on the Board of Governors of the North Carolina Reinsurance Facility by appointment of the North Carolina Insurance Commissioner.
Interested in the community, John graduated from the Cary Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program.
John was a thirty plus year member of the Homebuilders Association of Raleigh Wake County. He was a member of the Board of Directors since 2001. He has also served as Associate Vice President and Secretary. John served as chair of the Membership, Buildpac, and Education Committees for the Homebuilders. In 2014 John was inducted into the Home Builders Association of Raleigh Wake County Hall of Fame, honoring his twenty-plus years of membership and service to the homebuilding industry.
John served eight years as a member on the Wake County Planning Board and served three years as Chairman. He was a recipient of a 2007 Wake County Commissioners’ Volunteer Award for Distinguished Service. John also served a term on the Wake County ABC Board.
In his younger years, John was very active in the Raleigh Jaycees and was a member from 1978-1990. John was most proud of his participation in the Rotary Club of Cary , where he was a Life-long member. He served as president of the club and in 2014-15 John was named Rotarian of the Year.
John had a passion for his family, photography and his family vacations to Disney World and Disney Land.
John is survived by his devoted wife Janet Kiriluk Miller. He is also survived by his son John Andrew Miller and his wife Lisa McEwen Miller of Raleigh, NC and their son Alexander John Otto Miller (AJ). John is also survived by his sister Margaret (Peebee) Miller Scott and her husband Philip James Scott of Raleigh, NC. He is also survived by his niece Stephanie Bridger Hastings, and her husband Robert Paul Hastings of Raleigh, NC and their daughter Julia Harper Hastings and nephew Robert Lee Bridger, IV of Athens, GA.
