John was born on February 28th, 1942 in Richmond, Virginia to Joseph and Edith Preston. He was married in 1969 to Frances Pearson and together they raised two daughters, Sarah Rebecca and Elizabeth Catherine.
John was a graduate of Benedictine High School in Richmond before attending the University of Virginia, he remained an avid fan of all UVA sports throughout his life.
He loved the game of tennis and could be found on the courts of the Raleigh Racquet Club almost every day. He organized and captained teams over the years and loved competing in tournaments across the state and the Southern region.
John was both deeply kind and patient, which made him a natural born teacher. He had a keen intellect and a constantly curious mind. He was always learning, always trying to be a better person, always working on something creative.
He loved photography, poetry, nature and music. With a thoroughly jolly disposition, there was always a whistle on his lips and a twinkle in his eyes.
He is survived by his wife, his daughters, his sister Margaret of Tampa, Florida and 21 nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Joseph and Robert, and his sister, Patricia.
A service of Death and Resurrection is scheduled for Monday, May 6 at 2:00 pm at Edenton Street United Methodist Church, family will receive friends immediately following the service.
