Joseph (Joe) Clemens Hoying, age 70, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on March 23, 2021 of natural causes. He was born in Sidney, Ohio on April 14, 1950 and moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1981.
A builder by trade, Joe had a passion for living life. He met his wife Sue when they were in elementary school together and married in 1974 until her passing in 2007. He had an incredibly loving heart and would do anything he could to help out family and friends. Never known to be short on words, he would take each and every opportunity to chat, catch up and ask you how your own family was doing. Joe was a friend to many, through his connections at Saint Raphael’s, Our Lady of Lourdes, Cardinal Gibbons and many more. He had a love of being involved with his children’s sports teams, camping, auto racing, Tar Heel sports, old western and WWII movies, enjoying a good fire pit and especially trips to the beach.
Over the last few years, Joe loved to travel, many times packing up with no end destination in mind but wherever his heart told him to go. He enjoyed camping trips up and down the eastern seaboard, from Canada down through the Gulf Shores and to the Florida Keys, but he felt most at home when he was surrounded by his grandchildren. His five grandchildren were the light of his life and he was happiest spending time with them, laughing and smiling together.
Joe is survived by his: daughter Jessica and Miguel Gonzalez (Clayton, NC); son Joseph and Marilauren Hoying (Raleigh, NC); sister Nancy and Stan Pleiman (Anna, OH); brother Ron and Lynn Hoying (Fort Loramie, OH); brother Doug and Trish Hoying (Minster, OH); brother Jack and Brenda Hoying (Fort Loramie, OH); and grandchildren Susanna and Noah Gonzalez and Catherine, Elizabeth and Charles Hoying.
Joe is preceded in death by: wife Susan Hoying; parents Vernon and Betty Hoying; parent-in-laws Aloysius and Mary Margaret Hoelscher; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Louis and Jane Huber; and brother James Hoying.
The Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Raphael’s Catholic Church will be held on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at 11:00 AM. Immediately following the Mass, all are invited to the Columbarium at Saint Raphael’s Catholic Church in Raleigh, NC. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions in place at Saint Raphael’s, only family will be allowed inside the church for the funeral mass but all are included at the Columbarium ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Susan A.
