Karen Helene Berg

She was born in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, New York, where she attended P.S. 225 and Abraham Lincoln High School. She received her B.A. from City College of New York in 1956 and later earned a M.S. from State University of New York at New Paltz, N.Y.

She was a teacher in Middletown, N.Y. for a number of years before moving to Raleigh. In North Carolina, she was employed by American Airlines in its Cary reservations center before she retired in 1998. Prior to moving to Raleigh in 1984, she and her husband, Donald Berg, lived in Ellenville, New York and Novato, California where their children attended school and where she had many lasting friendships.

Karen enjoyed traveling. She and her husband traveled extensively in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Far East. She was also an excellent cook and hosted family Thanksgiving dinners for over 40 years, much appreciated by family and friends.

She enjoyed visual arts and for many years was a volunteer for the North Carolina Museum of Art. Karen was also a supporter of local ballet, symphony, and public radio stations. She enjoyed tennis and played locally at Raleigh Racquet and Seven Oaks clubs and at the Gleneagles Country Club in Delray Beach, F.L. and The Villages, F.L.

Karen's later years were at The Cardinal at North Hills senior living facility in Raleigh where she enjoyed lots of new friends, playing Bridge and watching TV's Blue Bloods and NCIS. She especially appreciated the support of the many wonderful employees who did so much to enhance her life during her last days.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Berg; a son, Richard Berg of Raleigh, N.C.; and a daughter, Meredith Goldstein of Kirkland, W.A.; and four grandchildren, Spencer Goldstein, Emma Berg, Lyle Goldstein, and Owen Berg.

A graveside service will take place at on Monday, August 3rd, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery.

The family will observe shiva immediately following the funeral service.
