She leaves behind her husband of 62 years, Harry Hurd, her children Cheryl (George) Laboy, and Robert Hurd, grandchildren Olivia and Angela, cousins Matt Mitchell, Wendy Mitchell Blankenship, and many other cousins from the Cowen side. She also adored her grand-dogs Sandy and Elvis. She cherished all her family and friends dearly.
She grew up in Louisville and had such fond memories of her childhood there. She was an only child but was very extroverted and always made friends easily. She grew up very close to her family and cherished her special relationship with her Grandparents. She never stopped talking of her Grandfather Robert L. Schmitt especially. She graduated from Atherton High School, and maintained lifelong friendships made throughout her childhood.
She graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor's degree in education. It was at UK that she met her future husband, Harry Hurd. She taught elementary school off and on for many years, while taking some time off to raise her children.
She always gave more than she received. She was like a flower always in bloom, bringing her beauty everywhere. She always made the family home beautiful, welcoming and comfortable. Her gift to us all was to bring people together, especially family. She worked tirelessly to make every holiday and occasion special and memorable. She also had a great compassion for all human beings which showed in her dedication as a volunteer at Interact for many years, and later as a volunteer at Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen and prison ministry. She had a big heart and was always generous to family members, her beloved St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and countless other charities. She leaves a long legacy of love, friendship, service, and generosity.
A visitation for Marcia will be held Monday, March 4, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 East Millbrook Road, Raleigh, North Carolina.
