Martha Frances Joyce

Martha Frances Joyce, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully after a long, full life on August 31, 2024 at the age of 93. Martha will be dearly missed, but her spirit will continue to shine brightly in the lives of all who knew and loved her.

Born and raised in Fair Bluff, North Carolina (where she was affectionately known as Cricket), Martha was a beacon of love, kindness, and grace to all who knew her. After attending Peace College, Martha embarked on a long career in retail banking, where she touched the lives of many with her warmth and unwavering integrity. Her clients and colleagues alike admired her dedication and genuine care for those she served.

Martha’s greatest joy, however, was her family. She shared a 52-year marriage with her husband, Sam, who was the love of her life. Together, they built a life filled with cherished memories. Her motto was “Bloom where you’re planted,” and she exemplified this in Charlotte, NC, Frankfurt, Germany, Los Angeles, CA, Ridgefield CT and finally back in Raleigh. She loved living on Wavendon Court and golfing with Sam at Northridge Country Club. She was a tireless caregiver to Sam in his final years.

Martha was a devoted mother. She raised two daughters, Sara of Raleigh, and Nancy of Atlanta, and was endlessly supportive of their endeavors. Martha's role as a grandmother brought her immense happiness. She was adored by her grandchildren, Thomas (Seattle) and Becca (Raleigh), who will forever remember their “Grandma” for her endless love, homemade milkshakes, and the countless fun-filled moments they shared. Martha was a woman of faith, compassion, and strength, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to be part of her life.

The family requests that donations be made in Martha’s memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, reflecting her commitment to Parkinson’s research. A special thank you to the caregivers and staff at Abbottswood, whose compassion and care is greatly appreciated.
