Marvin was born in Miami, Florida to Florence and David Schiller. He is survived by his three sisters and a brother.
Marvin received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami. He received a J.D. from Duke University School of Law and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
A highly-regarded employment law attorney, Marvin assisted North Carolinians for over 35 years. He was a founding member of the Raleigh law firm, Schiller & Schiller, PLLC with his wife, Carol Masters Schiller.
Along with Raleigh attorney G. Eugene Boyce, Marvin protected state disability benefits for about 7,000 disabled teachers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and other state and local government workers.
With Gastonia attorney William E. Moore, Jr., Marvin protected an employee’s right to notify supervisors about illegal conduct in the workplace and to cooperate with safety investigations.
Marvin recovered, pro bono, Horace Williams endowment funds in the amount of $6.3 million for UNC-CH philosophy students.
A devoted family man, Marvin took care of his late wife, Carol, through her nine year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. In 2008, Marvin established the Carol Masters Schiller Distinguished Scholar of Neurology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill.
Marvin showed remarkable strength and perseverance during the last three (3) years of his life, following an accident that left him quadriplegic. His optimism was unparalleled.
Surviving are: son David Garrett Schiller & wife Kathryn Heilman Schiller; daughter Stacey Schiller Roper & husband Matthew Price Roper; & grandchildren Noah Alexander Schiller, Ilse Caroline Schiller, Mason Garrett Little & Wade Davis Little, all of Raleigh, North Carolina. The family is grateful for Marvin’s caretakers over the last three (3) years who have forever become a part of the Schiller family: Jeffrey Williams and George Williams of Raleigh, NC.
A memorial service will be held 4:00 p.m. Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Brown Wynn Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609. Rabbi Pinchas Herman will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service.
Marvin will be reunited with his wife Carol at the Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery near Loganville, Georgia.
