Mary Justice Scott

Her memorial service will be held, Monday, September 7, 2026, at Millbrook Baptist Church, 1519 E Millbrook Rd., Raleigh, NC 27609. Visitation will be held at 12:00PM, with a service immediately following at 1:00PM.

Mary was born March 1, 1944, in Florence, South Carolina, and grew up in the small college town of Davidson, North Carolina. She was the oldest of two girls to Zoro ‘Zeke’ Knox Justice, Jr. and Lutrell ‘Lu’ Thompson. Mary graduated from North Mecklenburg High School in 1962, before attending Emory at Oxford College, then transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, for her final 2 years of college. After college, she moved to Charlotte, NC, and began her teaching career in Huntersville, NC. She met the love of her life, Jack Hillman Scott, Jr., through her future brother-in-law Greg, and married on March 15, 1969, in Davidson, NC. They later moved to Raleigh, NC, after accepting new job opportunities, and there raised two handsome boys, Jack Hillman (Hill) and Thomas Justice (TJ).

Mary was a beloved teacher for over 33 years, spending the majority of her career in Wake County, specifically, at Lynn Road Elementary School. Mary had a passion for life and found joy in the simple things that made each day beautiful. She had a true green thumb and took great pride in her garden; nurturing her plants with the same care and love she gave to those around her. Her garden was a reflection of her patience, spirit and ability to make things grow. She had a love for music and enjoyed many dances (shag and two-step) with her husband Jack, admitting he was the better dance partner. Mary also loved watching her Tarheels play basketball, she especially loved a good three-point shot.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and her beloved grandson Jack Hillman Scott, IV, who was stillborn. She is survived by her two sons Hill (Suzanne) and TJ (Bobbi), two grandsons Bennett and Griffin Scott, sister Frances ‘Fran’ Forsyth (Jerry), and brother-in-law Greg Scott and niece Skyler Scott.

Special thanks for all the assistance and wonderful care that Mary and the family received from the staff at Hallmark Homecare and Transitions Life Care Home Heath and Hospice Teams, Brentwood friends and neighbors, and fellow clergy members of Millbrook Baptist Church. Specifically, friend and chosen family Crissty Martin, and the nurses who cared and supported her in her final days, Vanessa Cox, LaTasha Adkins, and Kelly Onuoha.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Huntington’s Disease Society of America or the Millbrook Baptist Church Labyrinth & Sacred Garden in Raleigh, NC.
