Patricia “Patsy” Pate Stockstill died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, December 6 following a long battle with dementia. She was born in Wake County to Julia Ethel Smith and Tyson Pharoah Pate. Following her mother’s untimely death when Patsy was only six weeks old, she was subsequently raised from an early age by her father and her beloved stepmother, Pearl Champion Pate. She attended Raleigh public elementary schools and graduated from Millbrook High School. While she didn’t attend North Carolina State University, she fully adopted the family love of all things Wolfpack and she and her husband, George, were longtime season ticket holders of Pack football.
Patsy and her late husband, George McLean Stockstill, were high school sweethearts, and were together for almost 70 years before George’s passing in 2020. Immediately following high school graduation, they married and got to work building a successful residential building business in Raleigh. While George was the builder, Patsy had a natural gift for interior design, color, and style. Together, this powerhouse team built houses all over Wake County, and sometimes strayed into neighboring counties as well. Patsy supported her husband’s passions, as well as her own. She contributed to the James B. Green Masonic Lodge, and the Shriner’s Club. Yet, she was happiest when out in the field hunting doves. A “dead-eye,” she was one of the first female dove hunters in the state, and made the cover of Wildlife Magazine (NC) in ’74.
In her retirement years, Patsy (known as Bamie to her grandchildren) threw herself into becoming a grandmother any child would wish for. She taught her grandson to shoot as well as herself, and her granddaughter to bake EVERYTHING from scratch. She was always there with a warm smile, a deep and long hug, and a warm and crackling fire for tiny toes.
Surviving to mourn her loss are her daughter Beth (her late husband, Don Feldman) and granddaughter Julia Brinton (Matthew), great-grandchildren Hunter, Lincoln, and June, grandson Mitchell Feldman, her daughter Barbara Weller (Bob) and numerous cousins and friends with whom she remained close. She joins her husband, George, along with her parents, in heaven.
A receiving of friends will be held on Thursday, December 11 from 11am – 1pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Millbrook Road, followed by a graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery at 1:30 pm.
The family is grateful to James B. Green Lodge for the love and support they provided to both Patsy and George, for support from the community, and especially for the care team at Carolina Reserve, who provided gentle and supportive memory care. Flowers are welcome. Any memorial contributions can be made to JBG Lodge charities at P.O. Box 17273, Raleigh, NC 27619.
