Pearl was an exceptional person. Born in New York City, NY, she was the first generation from both sides of her family born in the US. Pearl was an excellent student and aspiring designer. When her father died accidental, Pearl, at 15 year old, had to leave school and her aspirations behind to help support her mother and 4 siblings. They depended on her for everything. This is how Pearl lived her life. She gave of herself unconditionally, always thinking of others and never thinking of herself. She married the love of her life, Phil, in 1950 while still in NY. They had three boys, to which she devoted her life. They were her reason to live. After spending 10 year in South Carolina, where she had her youngest son David, the family settled into the North Hills area of Raleigh in the late 60’s. Pearl enjoyed the growing and vibrant Jewish community in Raleigh. She felt Raleigh was a wonderful place to raise a family. After the untimely death of her husband Phil in 1985, Pearl remained active in the community, working, playing mahjong and enjoying time with her family and friends. She loved to dance, and took advantage at every opportunity. She was also a captivating story teller, constantly making everyone laugh to tears. If you did not get a chance to enjoy Pearl’s cookies, you’ve really missed out. Luckily there were many, many people, friends and strangers alike, which were able to enjoy them, especially during the holidays, when she prepared dozens of trays for her friends. Pearl was also an exceptional cook, making brisket, noodle pudding, gefilte fish among others. Her only grandchild, Adam, would always fill up his cooler with marinated flank steak, which was his favorite. A weekly visitor to the Green Street Public Library, Pearl would stock up on books for the week, reading five or six at a time. Her sister and best friend, Edith, would talk daily about books they have read and need to read. They set a shining example of the close bonds of family and should be an inspiration to us all. There will be a void in the lives of many with the passing of Pearl.
Pearl is survived by her son Fred Cohen and his friend Sheree Hyde of Greensboro, son Rob Cohen and wife Margaret of Raleigh, son David Cohen of Raleigh, and grandson Adam Cohen and wife Katie of Ashville. She is also survived by her sisters Edith Cohen of Brooklyn, NY, Jenny and husband Paul Laddin of Ipswich, MA, Bernice and husband Justin Hirshman of Cranbury, NJ, her brother Abe Weber and wife Dorothy of Kings Park, NY and brother-in-law Herb Cohen and wife Maureen of Los Angeles, CA, as well as ten nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, January 16, at the Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to your favorite charity.
