In 1960, Bob married the love of his life, Dorothy (Dot) Winchester. Together, over almost 65 years of marriage, they built a beautiful family including two children, Diana and Robert Jr., and were blessed with three wonderful grandchildren from Diana: Samuel Szuchan, John “David” Szuchan, and Lauren Yuhas (Timothy).
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Edna Winchester, Harry Winchester, Donald “Don” Winchester, and Catherine “Kit” Winchester.
Bob graduated from Georgia Tech (Mechanical Engineering) in 1960 (where he met Dot) and furthered his education by completing Harvard’s Advanced Management Program.
Bob was a man of many talents and passions. He was an avid golfer and found great joy in the game throughout his life. His craftsmanship was demonstrated in the handcrafted furniture he created, each piece a testament to his skill and dedication.
Bob was also known as a handyman who could fix anything for himself, his friends, or his family (often arriving in his beloved red pickup truck). His most cherished tradition was breakfast on Sunday mornings at North Ridge Country Club with his family (and plenty of butter). A man of careful cadence, he always spoke with impact and endlessly entertained friends and family with his unique sense of humor.
For 40 years, Bob proudly worked for Martin Marietta Materials (Superior Stone). He and his brothers, Don and Harry, dedicated their entire careers, totalling over 120 years, to the company and building lifelong friendships along the way.
Special thanks to the dear friends from North Ridge, The Cypress, Martin Marietta, and others who enriched Bob’s life with their companionship. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful and caring staff at Rex Hospital, Transitions LifeCare, and The Rosewood for their support and compassion during Bob's final days.
Donations to Transitions LifeCare, or a charity of your choice, are welcome in lieu of flowers.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at a later date, where family and friends can gather to honor and remember Bob. His legacy of love, kindness, and craftsmanship will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
He joins a centuries-long lineage of believing family in wait of a bodily resurrection. May he rest in peace.
