OBITUARY
Sharon (Sheri) T. Taylor
June 26, 1957 – December 15, 2017
Sheri Taylor passed away peacefully Friday morning after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. She was born in Lexington, North Carolina to Stan and Louise Tate. A member of the First Baptist Church, she graduated salutatorian of the Lexington High School class of 1975. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received her BS degree in Nursing in May 1979. She then began what became a 38 year career dedicated to caring for newborn babies and their mothers. She served as head nurse of the intensive care nursery at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro before transitioning to her true passion of lactation consulting. She spent the last 20-plus years at Rex Hospital in Raleigh where she is credited as Founder of the Rex Infant Nutrition Program, and in 2015 was recognized as one of the “Great 100 Nurses in North Carolina”. She was loved by all those she served and worked alongside.
She was raised in a loving family with her older brother Jim Tate (He and his wife Debbie and their two children, all live in the Lexington area). In December 1979 she married her college sweetheart, Kenneth, and they would have celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary on December 30th of this year. Together they raised a son and daughter, Benjamin and Jennifer. In 2008 Benjamin married Kelly Harding adding a new daughter to the family. Sheri embraced her role as “Grammy” to her three grandchildren, Elaine (6), Thomas (3) and Simon (1). They were the light of her life and she gave her heart completely to all of them.
The family will receive friends Monday, December 18 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 East Millbrook Rd, in Raleigh. A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday, December 19 at 2:00pm at Grace Community Church, 7041 Old Wake Forest Rd, also in Raleigh. A graveside service for family will be held Wednesday at Gaston Memorial Park in Gastonia.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Rex Healthcare Foundation - NICU / Special Care Nursery Fund, which can be found online, at https://rexhealthcarefoundation.com/ or Grace Community Church.

Sheri, we are going to miss your kindness and compassion in our NICU. You were such a joy to the lives you touched. Today you passed me on your final journey to Gastonia, you didn't know I was there but fate intervened. It was around 9:30 in the morning, your usual time to show up in the unit that we were both on 40 heading west that you passed me. It gave me great joy to escort you silently on this final journey to your resting place. You fought the good fight you will be missed.

Sheri was my lactation teacher through the training program at UNC. She had a heart of gold and a passion for teaching especially about lactation. She was more than a teacher. She was also a friend. She had an open door policy and I could go to her at Rex at anytime for career advice. She will surely be missed but also she will be welcomed in heaven.

She did such a great job helping Krystal (my wife) and Hadley (my daughter) learn to breastfeed! She was so kind and patient, and always seemed to know the right thing to say. We will miss her, even though we only knew her for a few weeks.
We are so sorry for your loss. We pray that God will keep your family in his tender care over these coming days and weeks, and that his peace will flow through you.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. Sheri was a true blessing to our family during our stay at the Rex NICU with our twins. Her love and passion for her job did not go unnoticed and we still think back to her help while we were in the hospital often.
