

Sidney Gerard Hawkes (90), of Springfield, VA passed peacefully on May 16, 2024. Sid was born on August 20, 1933 in Dixfield, Maine to Burton Hawkes and Aldine Gaudet Hawkes. Maine is where he began his lifetime love of fly fishing, skiing, golfing, and the Boston Red Sox. He graduated from high school in 1951, joined the Army, and graduated from Officer Candidate School in 1955. He graduated from the University of Maine (UM) with a degree in finance and economics in 1958. On the campus of UM he met Vola Jane Saunders, who became his loving wife for 61 years.
In 1960, Sid started his 36 year-long career with the Mead Corporation in Dayton, Ohio. He received an MBA from the University of Dayton, in 1967. In 1971, Sid was promoted to Washington representative for Mead, and he and Jane moved their family to Springfield, VA. In 1981 he was promoted to vice president, Washington Affairs, and he represented Mead on Capitol Hill until his retirement in 1996. Sid and Jane loved to travel and spend time at their home at Lake Anna with their family and many friends. Sid spent as much time as possible playing golf at Congressional Country Club. He was known for his wisdom, quick wit, telling Maine jokes, and his deep love for family.
Sid is preceded in death by his wife, Jane Saunders Hawkes, his parents, and his sister, Jeanne Hawkes Bedard. He leaves behind four children, Debbie Danforth (Jeff), Brenda Hawkes, Shelly Hawkes, Steven Hawkes (Diana); 5 grandchildren; Jason Danforth (Kim), Mitch Danforth, Courtney Weeks Saunders (Daryn), Brett Danforth (Lindsey), Sydney Hawkes, five great-granddaughters; his sister Judy Hawkes Theriault; brother Burton Hawkes; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 29, in the chapel at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home at 2:00 pm, 1701 East Millbrook Rd., Raleigh NC 27609. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations in the name of Sidney Hawkes to be made to Project Healing Waters. Project Healing Waters is an organization dedicated to helping active military personnel and veterans in need through a dedicated, developed curriculum of fly fishing, fly casting, fly tying, and fly rod building. https://projecthealingwaters.org/
