

She was born in Danville, VA on September 12, 1941 to the late Leona Eunice Roberts and the late John Lewis Thomas of Greensboro, NC and Smithfield, NC. She was a member of Lindley Park Baptist Church of Greensboro and, as an accomplished pianist, played piano and organ during the services. She accepted Christ as her Savior at a Billy Graham Crusade in 1952. She was later a member of Crabtree Valley Baptist Church, Raleigh, NC.
Virginia’s school years were spent in Greensboro, graduating from Greensboro Senior High School in 1959. At Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, she completed a major in Sociology and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences at Campbell University. As Social Worker and Specialist to Adults the following years, she worked in several NC counties under the NC Department of Social Services.
In October, 2018, Virginia retired after 41 years with the counties and the Division of Information Resource Management as a Computer Librarian. On January 1, 2019, she was honored with The Order of the Long Leaf Pine presented by Governor Roy Cooper.
Virginia is predeceased by her only sibling, Bryon L. Thomas, who died August 13, 2017 at the age of 81. He graduated from Greensboro Senior High School in 1954 and retired as Captain from the Greensboro Police Department.
Family survivors include; Niece, Lisa Thomas Philips of Henderson, NV and Special Niece, Laura Fontanilla of Kailua, Hawaii. Long time family friends include; Carol McRae, formerly of Sanibel Island now living in Cullowhee, NC near her family; Steve and Libby McRae and daughters Katy and Lucy also of Cullowhee, NC, Scott McRae of Tampa, Florida; Janet Hensel and son Craig of Raleigh; Sue Ann Holloway of Richmond, Va; and family cousins in NC; Earlene Hudson, John Thomas, John Dallas, Johnsie Oddenine, and Cornelia Steel.
Virginia had a great love of family, friends and all animals, especially her love for all the cats she rescued and brought into her world. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her.
Virginia will be laid to rest at her family graveside at Mt. Herman Baptist Church cemetery in Reidsville, NC on October 13th.
