The family invites you to join them at the church following the service to share refreshments and your favorite stories and memories.
Al was born in Big Run, Pennsylvania, on June 17, 1942, to Harold DeVere and Marie Catherine Kellar. At the age of 3 years, he moved with his family to Stirling City, California, where he lived until 1957 when he made Red Bluff his lifelong home. After a stint at rodeo and working at the Diamond mill, he joined the US Army and fought in Vietnam from 1964 to 1966. Following his military service, Al became a lineman with PG&E, retiring in 1993 as a Gas and Electric Construction Supervisor. He then consulted with PG&E for several years as a Project Inspector.
Al’s life was filled with the joy of the outdoors, backpacking, hunting, and camping. He loved all animals, and especially and most recently, Brody, Boomer, Cooper, and Konan. Growing flowers, gardening, canning, cooking, reading, and woodworking were favorite pastimes. He was an expert marksman and founded the Tehama Shooters Association, teaching children and adults alike safety and respect in firearms handling. In his early years, he served as a volunteer fireman for the Bend District. He loved helping his neighbors and was generous with his time to his many friends.
Al is survived by his son, Joseph of the home; his sisters, Patricia Greening of Rancho Murieta, California and Penelope Kellar of Raleigh, North Carolina; his friend, Marjorie Sovereign of Lakeside, Oregon; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Karen (Van Dyke) Kellar; his mother Marie; his brother William; and his sister Diane.
The family expresses its profound gratitude to all of Al’s friends and neighbors who supported him during his illness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you contribute in his memory to the following charity or to a charity of your choice:
