Harvey “Bud” E. Cargill was born in Crowder, Oklahoma, on May 30, 1933, to Lessie and John L. Cargill. He spent most of his youth in Haywood, Oklahoma, and graduated from Haywood High School. After high school, Harvey joined the United States Air Force and served our country for 10 years in the Korean War.
He married Betty Joyce Peterson of Austin, Texas. They had two children – a son, Jack Alan Cargill, and a daughter Tresia Lynn Cargill. Betty and Harvey divorced in 1973, and in 1974 he married the second love of his life, Faye Jean Jackson DeRosa. They were married until her death in February of 2022.
After 10 years in the Air Force, and a move from Georgia to Texas, he worked as an insurance salesman. In 1968, he moved his family to Santa Maria, California, where he worked and continued his education at Hancock College earning an associate degree in business, and for several years he taught evening classes at the college.
Harvey gained employment with the City of Santa Maria and eventually became the Purchasing Agent for the City of Lompoc, where he retired in 1980. He was most proud of these two things – his career as a purchasing agent and an early retirement.
Harvey enjoyed telling a story and always had a joke to share. He enjoyed training and riding horses, growing a very productive vegetable garden, reading (especially the old westerns) fishing, hunting, and collecting guns. He loved his family and this country.
